Referencing a plethora of ideas and symbols such as the Bible, Homer, Zoroastrianism, Plato, Aristotle, Hermetiscm, and Kabbalism, Camillo mapped out all of human knowledge on different levels of a seven-tiered theater, based on Vitruvius's description of a Roman theater in his “De Architectura”. Camillo built on the Roman ars memoria, or "art of memory," which was based on memory loci, a mneumonic technique that ancient orators used to connect what they wanted to remember with specific places. Although I am only taking the barebones of Camillo’s treatise, what stuck was his supposed inspiration from the root word of theater (théatron) in Greek, which comes from the verb “to see” (theaomai). Upon seeing the archaeological site of Kourion in Cyprus, where the Greco-Roman theater from the 2nd century BC sits, I imagined the theater as its own entity, accessing its memories within its own memory loci. What would it say as a multicultural being after countless borders and changes enacted over it? What remained the same from its viewpoint? My hope is that this piece will be a starting point for myself in thinking about how memory as a theatrical experience differs in specific places. <img width="2873" height="1729" width_o="2873" our first language is the language of emotion All I can remember is that my first language cannot be written I think I can only dream in images, from the millions of sunrises and sunsets arched over the horizon line to the shadows that orbit around me I live in repetition The only constant is the sea Sometimes the border between these different shades of blue ceases to exist How can I tell when one blue ends and another one begins? Sometimes it is as clear as the moon’s gaze piercing the dark, but most of the time I have trouble finding the border between memory and reality just like the border between the sea and the sky. The only constant is that I dream in images. After all, my name is from the root word “to see”. I am but a spectator of the world The constant is the sea of which I remain seated towards My memories and imagination are reflected in the wall of blue The sea lives in repetition too As we watch each other between the border of what is real and what is not. The colors and forms that emerge unconsciously in my painting reveal familiar faces, acquaintances, places I have lived in the US and Japan, and other landscapes I often come across in my dreams. Dream and reality, body and image, Japan and the US, mother tongue and acquired language—I create work from this “in-between” space between two elements. As a former ballet dancer, I’m interested in how paintings can also take up space as moving bodies. Set within gallery yolcha’s intimate architecture, static wall paintings are juxtaposed with moving translucent fabric paintings. As the fabric breathes with the wind, mimicking that of dancers moving,&nbsp;Pareidolia seeks to create a space conducive to daydreaming so that viewers can seek out imaginative landscapes and figures emerging from the paintings. 「パレイドリア」は私たちが視覚刺激から、人物、動物、顔など、心に浮かび上がる幻想を見る傾向。建物の壁に顔や、月の中にいる兎や。私が絵を描くとき、筆から無意識で出てくる色や形からは、身近な顔、 知り合い、日米それぞれで住んできた家など、夢の中で存在するものが見えてくる。夢と現実、身体とイメージ、日本とアメリカ、日本語と英語、必ず２つの要素の「間」を漂っている場から描く。 そして、過去にバレエダンサーとして活動していた私には「身体」への意識も残っている。バレエをやめた作家として今でも興味があるのが、描いた絵画が「身体」として、それも「動く身体」として存在できるのか。ヨルチャでは雲を眺めるように、風と一緒に踊る絵画から鑑賞者の心に様々な残像を浮かび上がらせたい。 <img width="6048" height="4024" width_o="6048" Anagram: a form of wordplay in which words or phrases are created by rearranging the letters of a different word or phrase e.g. Tokyo→ Kyoto signature→ a true sign Conceived from the utility of stage flats, “Anagram” consists of four abstract-shaped paintings on caster wheels. Much like its namesake, these panels can be reoriented in any order to create new images through their different placements. As the paintings intersect and overlap with one another, different colors and forms fluctuate between figuration and abstraction. Akin to the way writer W.G. Sebald compared the act of dreaming to a form of theater “in which we are at once playwright, actor, stage manager, scene painter, and audience”, the four panels explore the fluid concept of memory in their interchangeable nature. “Anagram” also challenges the finite objecthood of paintings in their ability to be moved or “activated” by the viewer. The height and width of each panel are set specifically by sizes that are liftable by the artist or at most, as large as a standard able-bodied adult body. The stage-like installation aims to create an “in-between” space that straddles the illusions on a theatrical stage while revealing its mechanisms like in its backstage area, as well as to blur the boundary between the viewer and the performer as anyone who participates can be a performer. Additionally, in her seminal essay “An Anagram on Art, Form, and Film” (1946) avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren posited her creative approach to an anagram-like structure in which all elements such as form, aesthetic, and content were equally important and yet, interchangeable. Insisting against a narrow “horizontal” approach in cinema, Deren was referring to&nbsp; a “vertical” or “poetic” approach that was concerned “not with what is occurring but with what it feels like or with what it means.” Similar to Deren’s concept, the four paintings in “Anagram” exist simultaneously with infinite orientations. Against the idea of images as static entities, what remains consistent is their fluidity. As part of Kyoto University of Art’s MFA thesis 2023 アナグラム: 言葉の綴り変え遊び 例：Tokyo→Kyoto signature→ a true sign 「アナグラム」は、舞台の平面の実用性から発想されたもので、キャスター付きの抽象的な形のペインティング4枚で構成されています。その名の通り、これらのパネルは自由に向きを変えることができ、配置を変えることで新たなイメージを生み出すことができます。ペインティングが互いに交差し、重なり合うことで、色や形が具象と抽象の間で揺れ動きます。W・G・ゼーバルトが、夢を見るという行為を「劇作家、俳優、舞台監督、場面画家、観客である」という演劇に例えたように、4枚のパネルは交換可能であることから、記憶という流動的な概念を探っている。「アナグラム」は、絵画の有限な物体性を、鑑賞者によって動かされたり「活性化」されたりする能力に挑戦する。各パネルの高さと幅は、アーティストが持ち上げられるサイズか、せいぜい標準的な健常者の身体と同じ程度の大きさで具体的に設定されている。このインスタレーションは、舞台上の幻想を跨ぎながら、舞台裏のような仕掛けを見せる「中間」の空間を作り出すこと、また、参加する誰もがパフォーマーになりうることから、鑑賞者とパフォーマーの境界を曖昧にすることを目指している。また、前衛映画作家のマヤ・デレンは、代表的なエッセイ「芸術、形式、映画に関するアナグラム」(1946) の中で、形式、美学、内容といったすべての要素が等しく重要で、しかも交換可能であるというアナグラム的構造を自分の創造的アプローチとして提起している。デレンは、映画における狭い「水平」アプローチに反対し、「垂直」または「詩的」アプローチに言及した。「何が起こっているかではなく、それがどのように感じられるか、何を意味するか」に関心があった。 Portmanteau ultimately explores the multiplicity of self; this includes a nod to the French word for door “porte”, a key visual in Nostos signifying an entry into different dimensions, further complicated by the fabric multiplying it into endless portals opening and closing onto one another. Sources such as “The Future of Nostalgia” by Svetlana Boym (2000) as well as others from antiquity such as Janus the Roman god of doors, and the “Theatre of Memory”, a mnemonic technique by 16th century Italian philosopher Giulio Camillo in which memories are affixed to specific physical places reimagined in the mind also inform the excavation of memory. Combining personal archives from the US as well as my natural surroundings in Japan, Nostos follows my character flitting in and out of a dreamscape and coming in contact another version of myself, played by my younger sister. While my body moves within my dream world and real world in tandem with one another, Portmanteau (Nostos) explores the interstitial states between dream and reality, subject and object, memory and myth, illustrating what Boym wrote in that “reflective nostalgia has a capacity to awaken multiple planes of consciousness”. <img width="7952" height="5304" width_o="7952" height_o="5304" poetry that predates the well-known haiku in Japan. Unlike haiku’s format of three units (5-7-5) and seventeen syllables, tanka consists of five units (5-7-5–7-7) and thirty-one syllables. Tanka is also characterized by a more self-reflective approach to a poet’s surroundings than a haiku. In the book Japanese Death Poems: Written by Zen Monks and Haiku Poets on the Verge of Death compiled by Yoel Hoffman, the tanka is described as containing two poetic images: The first is taken from nature; the second, which may precede, follow, or be woven into the first, is a kind of meditative complement to the nature image. Tanka produce a certain dreamlike effect, presenting images of reality…the image proceeded directly from the mind of the dreamer. The tanka poet may be likened to a person holding two mirrors in his hands, one reflecting a scene from nature, the other reflecting himself as he holds the first mirror. Inspiration for Tanka is rooted in this passage, compiling clips that show the historic Kamogawa River from different seasons and locations in Kyoto. Cut to patterns of 5-7-5-7-7 seconds, the video reimagines the counts to which a tanka poet may utter a poem inside their head. There are two rivers shown, a river that the camera captures and a river that a mirror captures, alluding to the metaphorical mirror in the passage.
