Doncho-
Kei Ota×Kana Hashimoto joint exhibition
gallery yolcha

gallery yolcha is pleased to present a joint exhibition with contemporary artist Kei Ota and illustrator Kana Hashimoto, whose divergent practices share the theme of ‘boundaries’ and the act of transcending them. The name Doncho [Drop Curtain] refers to the curtain that separates the stage from the audience. It is also used as a prop to configure and mask parts of the stage or create dramatic effects such as scenery changes. Ota and Hashimoto create cinematic and theatrical worlds that fluctuate between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. The exhibition initially appears cryptic with narrative and abstract elements–but the viewer’s inner world gradually expands, just as the curtain inevitably rises and the show starts the moment one takes their seat in a theater. Here, painting, a spatial art form, seems to border on performance, a time-based art form. These works seemingly transcend what is visible on a symbolic level to divulge deeper, intangible memories and emotions. If a work of art were a window, it is the audience that chooses when and how to look through it. Set within yolcha’s unique and intimate space, I invite viewers to come and experience the exhibition as if watching a performance on a small stage.
