Metathesis

Oil, acrylic, fabric, wire, caster wheels
In this exhibition, I continued my ongoing interest in stage sets to create a new installation exploring the theatricality of painting. The title metathesis referred to a linguistic phenomenon where the order of sounds or syllables is rearranged, changing a word’s pronunciation. This process occurs naturally in the evolution of language as linguistic communities adapt words for ease of pronunciation and can be found across multiple languages, including Japanese and English. Informed by my experience navigating dual cultural identities, as well as my memories surrounded by stage design sets in ballet, I drew a parallel between the flexibility of language embodied by metathesis and my interest in the flexibility of painting as a medium.
Similar to the rearrangement of elements within a word, I moved the stage flats in the gallery throughout the exhibition, generating new image associations with the fabric pieces that comprised the exhibition’s central visual. Referencing personal memories that fluctuate between dream and reality, I composed the original painting to allow new associations to emerge depending on the position of each flat in relation to the fabric. Through this presentation of painting as a dynamic form, I referred to German author W.G. Sebald’s novel The Rings of Saturn (1995):
I suppose it is submerged memories that give to dreams their curious air of hyper-reality…A pond becomes a lake, a breeze becomes a storm, a handful of dust is a desert, a grain of sulphur in the blood is a volcanic inferno. What manner of theatre is it, in which we are at once playwright, actor, stage manager, scene painter and audience?
